GESUNDHEIT TEACHING + MEDICAL CENTER – HILLSBORO, WV

DDB has been the General Contractor and the Architect of Record for the Gesundheit Institute.  The Patch Adams Teaching Center is now under construction and will have an enclosed envelope by early fall encompassing four floors with residential spaces, a commercial kitchen, two theaters and many classrooms.  For 7 years DDB has acted as the General Contractor for construction of many buildings on the the 310 acre parcel, though the Teaching Center is the largest by a magnitude of 6. To date, nearly 10,000 sq. of the Teaching Center is under roof with a projected 15,000 more remaining for a total finished structure of 25,000 sq. ft.

The design for a holistic medical care and education center was created. Patch’s desire for a health care community based on friendship and mutual interdependence was implemented in the creation of “The Gesundheit Hospital”. The design allows “for staff that lives in the facility with their families in a collective atmosphere of happiness, silliness, love, creativity and cooperation. The atmosphere would enhance healing and relieve suffering.” Design Draw Build continues to work as architect and builder on this 25,000 SQ FT project located on 321 acres of land in Hillsboro, West Virginia.

The process of construction for the teaching center has been challenging over a multi-year phasing process (2012-current) with limited resources available for this size of structure in the surrounding area. Hollow-core concrete plate construction along with large composite steel and wood make this 4-1/2 story structure unique in form and construction delivery. Pending client funding, DDB hopes to finish the exterior of the warm shell in 2018.
