ALKALI FLAT CO-LIVING

This 8,285-square-foot adaptive reuse project transforms a former three-unit office building into a 20-bedroom co-living residence for Re-Viv Development. Originally constructed in 1912, the structure is a designated historic landmark within the Alkali Flats District, carrying both architectural character and cultural significance. The design approach centers on a complete interior reconfiguration—preserving the historic shell while introducing a new residential program tailored to contemporary communal living. A full gut renovation allowed for the integration of all-new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, bringing the building up to modern performance standards.

The project balances private and shared living experiences. Twenty bedrooms are complemented by generous communal spaces, including a shared kitchen and multiple activity rooms that foster connection and daily interaction among residents. These collective spaces are strategically placed to activate the building’s interior and create a sense of community within the historic framework. By pairing preservation with transformation, the project extends the life of a century-old structure while introducing a new model of urban housing—one that is efficient, social, and responsive to evolving patterns of living.
