INN AT NEWPORT RANCH
Perched along the rugged bluffs of the Mendocino Coast, The Inn at Newport Ranch is a 2,200-acre hospitality retreat where architecture is inseparable from the landscape—merging redwood forest, pasture, and Pacific coastline into a singular spatial experience. Design Draw Build’s role in the project extended beyond conventional construction support, embedding the team deeply within both the architectural and cultural identity of the ranch. Having previously worked for over a decade within the office of the project’s architect, our team brought an intimate understanding of the design intent, material language, and site-driven ethos that define the property.
Our scope focused on full construction services, stonework and construction administration, contributing to the handcrafted, materially rich character of the Inn. Native stone—often sourced directly from the ranch—was carefully integrated into walls, fireplaces, and site elements, reinforcing the project’s commitment to using materials that are both of the place and enduring in nature. These elements anchor the architecture to the land, complementing the broader palette of wood, steel, and glass that together create a distinctly organic architectural language. Working in close collaboration with the ownership and design team, we provided on-site construction oversight to ensure that the architectural vision was executed with precision. This level of involvement was heightened by an unusually immersive process—living in the owner’s home for a year during construction—which allowed for real-time decision-making, continuous coordination, and a deeply personal understanding of the project’s ambitions.
In parallel, Design Draw Build led a branding initiative for the Inn, developing the logo that continues to represent the property today. This effort extended the architectural narrative into a visual identity, aligning the brand with the Inn’s ethos of rugged refinement, craft, and connection to place.The result is a hospitality environment defined by authentic material expression, experiential richness, and architectural continuity—a project where design, construction, and identity were developed in tandem to create a truly singular destination along California’s North Coast.
